Fuji Electric HPnC IGBT: Powering Photovoltaic Power Conversion
In April 2024, Fuji Electric launched the HPnC series of high-capacity industrial IGBT modules, specifically designed for power conversion systems (PCS) in solar and wind power generation. These modules deliver industry-leading performance with 1800A rated current and 2300V withstand voltage, addressing the growing demand for high-power photovoltaic inverters in utility-scale renewable energy installations.
HPnC Series Product Lineup
The HPnC series includes four primary models: 2MBI1200XZF170-50 (1200A/1700V), 2MBI1500XZF170-50 (1500A/1700V), 2MBI1800XZF170-50 (1800A/1700V), and 2MBI1200XZF230-50 (1200A/2300V). All modules share a compact 100mm x 144mm x 40mm 2-Pack format, enabling high-power-density inverter designs. The 1800A variant achieves approximately 80% higher current capacity than previous generation products while maintaining the same module dimensions.
1500VDC Photovoltaic System Support
The 2300V withstand voltage variant enables single-module support for 1500VDC power converters, a critical requirement for modern utility-scale photovoltaic systems. By optimizing the IGBT and FWD chip voltage withstand structures, Fuji Electric eliminates the need for series-connected modules, reducing module count and peripheral circuit components. This simplification lowers overall system cost and improves reliability.
Advanced Chip and Packaging Technology
The HPnC series incorporates the latest generation IGBT chip technology with optimized internal terminal layout and chip arrangement. High-thermal-conductivity materials are applied throughout the module structure to maximize heat dissipation. The 7th generation X Series chip foundation ensures low conduction and switching losses, while the robust packaging design provides the power cycling capability required for daily thermal cycling in solar power applications.
Reducing Solar Power Generation Costs
Higher single-module current capacity directly reduces solar power generation costs. By increasing per-unit capacity, fewer modules are needed for a given inverter power rating, reducing installation space and assembly costs. In photovoltaic installations, the space savings can be redirected to expand solar panel area, increasing overall energy harvest. The 1500VDC architecture further reduces DC cabling and combiner box requirements, improving end-to-end system efficiency by 1.5% to 2%.
Applications Beyond Photovoltaic
While optimized for photovoltaic PCS applications, the HPnC series is equally suited for wind power generation converters, smart grid power quality equipment, and large-scale energy storage systems. Fuji Electric’s IGBT module packaging facility in Shenzhen, China provides local manufacturing support for solar, wind, smart grid, industrial automation, railway, and electric vehicle customers across the Asia-Pacific region, ensuring supply chain reliability for renewable energy projects.
