Infineon HybridPACK IGBT Modules: Powering EV Traction Inverters
Infineon Technologies is the global market leader in power semiconductors, and its HybridPACK series of automotive IGBT modules represents the industry standard for electric vehicle traction inverter applications. These modules serve as the core power switching components in EV motor control systems, converting DC power from the battery pack into precisely controlled AC power for the drive motor.
HybridPACK Drive: The Mainstream EV Traction Module
The HybridPACK Drive module is Infineon’s flagship automotive power module, supporting both silicon IGBT and CoolSiC MOSFET technologies. Now in its second generation (G2), the module incorporates sintered ceramic technology, direct cooling, and on-chip temperature sensors. It covers inverter power ratings from 30 kW to 250 kW, making it suitable for a wide range of vehicle platforms from compact electric cars to high-performance luxury EVs.
The module’s dual-sided cooling (DSC) variant further enhances thermal performance, enabling higher continuous power output within a compact footprint. This is critical for modern EVs where space constraints demand maximum power density.
Advanced IGBT Chip Technology
Infineon’s automotive IGBT chips utilize TRENCHSTOP and FieldStop technology, significantly reducing saturation voltage without increasing switching losses. The EDT2 chip technology represents the third generation of electric drivetrain chip innovation, offering 750V IGBT and diode solutions with high voltage and current handling capability combined with efficient switching performance. The TRENCHSTOP 5 series operates at junction temperatures up to 175 degrees Celsius, ensuring reliable operation under demanding automotive thermal conditions.
SiC vs Si: Optimized Material Strategy
In 800V battery systems, CoolSiC MOSFET technology provides approximately 6% range improvement under WLTP driving conditions compared to silicon IGBT solutions. Infineon’s strategy envisions both materials coexisting: SiC for rear-wheel inverters to maximize range, and silicon for front-wheel systems to optimize cost. This dual-technology approach gives automakers flexibility in balancing performance and cost across their vehicle portfolios.
Complete System Solution for EV Motor Control
Beyond the power module itself, Infineon provides a complete traction inverter ecosystem. The EiceDRIVER G3 gate driver family achieves ASIL-D functional safety levels, the AURIX microcontroller offers decoder interfaces and AI-based predictive maintenance capabilities, and XENSIV current sensors enable precise motor control. This integrated approach simplifies system design and accelerates time-to-market for EV manufacturers.
Automotive Qualification and Reliability
All HybridPACK modules meet the stringent AQG 324 automotive qualification standard, with high mechanical strength designed to withstand the vibration and thermal cycling environments typical of vehicle deployment. The modules are qualified for production at major automotive OEMs worldwide, supporting the rapid electrification transition across the global automotive industry.
